Elephant Embrace

A mother elephant and her calf walk side by side, painted in a monumental palette of soft blue-greys, slate and deep charcoal that gives this hand-painted watercolour card a quiet grandeur unlike anything else in the collection. The anatomy is carefully observed, the wrinkled trunks, the tufted tails, the slight tilt of the mother's enormous ear,  and yet the overall feeling is one of profound tenderness. Elephants are among the most devoted and emotionally complex mothers in the animal kingdom. This card honours that truth without a word of explanation. Hand-painted in watercolour in my London studio.
